“My mother (Agnes) had an autograph book with lots of pictures in it and little things to say. I don’t know whether it was hers, perhaps from a sister. One cartoon showed a caterpillar climbing a tree, with the caption, “Grub’s going up” – a reference, she said, to the rocketing price of food in one of the many depressions this poor old country has suffered. Goodness knows where it is now – I haven’t got it.”
