Cynthia, Hazel, Lyndon
Cynthia, now known as Cindy, was the first born in May 1941, the war years, in Birmingham. Two years later in 1943, her sister Hazel now known as Hazel, was born in York, Yorkshire. When Hazel was six in 1947 their brother Lyndon (now known as Fred) was born in Birmingham.
Cindy was lured to New Zealand by Delrick, now known as Del, and they married in Aukland in 1964 – a brave step – not marriage, emigrating to a different country. Timothy Turner turned up in Hazel’s life and they got married in 1972 in Sutton Coldfield.

“I have two recollections of Fred’s children, the first of which involves Lyndon, staying with me at 127 Pierce Avenue, Olton. Why I have no idea, but I guess half-term. I used to go to a tip nearby on which grew Rose Bay Willow Herb the dried stems of which made excellent arrows fired from Alder or Willow bows. Very Amazons etc. Lyndon thought this was an excellent game but sought to improve it by adding a sharpened slate triangular point just like the Indians did in the films.
The bread or milk delivery flatbed was nearby and the horse (yes) was feeding out of a bag round it’s neck. He pulled the arrow back on the bow and shot it into the air only for it to land on the flank of the horse; tumult ensued involving the driver.
[I put this story to Lyndon at the “do” and he had no recollection of it. Now that I have written it down, I think it is a case of mistaken identity, the real culprit being a cousin Michael on my Father’s side. I will leave it in for now, pending confirmation; why spoil a story with the facts?].
I think Lyndon stayed, but again why? The second occasion was I think a visit to Fred’s by bus. Location? I call it Erdington, but may not be correct. I think it was a bit foggy. Fred put the telly on and showed us colour television (I was probably 8/9 so 1953/4 – way ahead of it’s time!).
The black and white television set had a striped colour filter on the screen which made it colour. As characters moved around the screen they would change colour – ROYGBIV. I couldn’t quite get it!
The second or third occasion happened after that at 127 Pierce Avenue. I had been out playing (alone as usual in my own little world; a benefit of being an only child) and it was late and dark. From the back gate, I could peer through a hole, and look into the lounge some 45-50 feet away. The light was on, and all I could see where two very pretty girls. I could sort of get girls (mixed primary school), but was very embarrassed in their company. I was very disconcerted at their presence, who were they? Why did they seem so attractive and older than me? Were they playing with my toys? How rude!
Well I had to go in as I was late, scared of the dark, and hungry. I took a deep breath, opened the gate, and marched down the path. In through the back door and into the lounge, straight to my toy cupboard, took off my shoes, and ignored them completely (and Lindon). How rude was I. Eventually the penny dropped as to who they were, probably by Mother telling me off in front of them!
